Match Preview

*HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPARISON (Last Five Matches)
None; both teams will meet for the first time in this season’s UEFA Champions League

The Manchester United squad have trekked into the unknown in their previous Champions League match this season when they fought Romanian champions and Group H second-placers CFR Cluj. United face another challenge of dealing with unfamiliar opponents Braga in the pitch, since the Portuguese side have not played past through rival English top-flight club yet.

United would not pit in Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand in defence. The tested back-line duo will exchange places with Scott Wootton and Alexander Buttner. Midfielders Shinji Kagawa, Ryan Giggs and Tom Cleverley could figure a comeback in the starting line-up, while possibilities for starter positions remain for Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Nani. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has the option of starting all of his four-man striker-force – Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, although in varying positions up front.

Braga captain Alan will be a threat United must reckon. He recorded an impressive performance during their 2-0 away win against Turkish side Galatasaray, having scored the second goal. Another potentially dangerous attacker is Eder, the club’s new main striker. He already scored four goals for his new club this season. Ruben Micael, on loan from Atletico Madrid, is a skilled playmaker that has made five goals since his move this season.

English Premier League Soccer | Gary Neville Says Wayne Rooney Could Improve Further

THE LATEST SPORTS NEWS – Former soccer defender for Manchester United Gary Neville said that his ex-teammate Wayne Rooney could still improve in his position as a striker.

Rooney has played past through rival teams with Manchester United since his signing in 2004. Neville compared him to veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, referring the two as being successful in improving themselves on the pitch.

12BET English Premier League News | Laurent Koscielny Calls Luis Suarez a Cheater

THE LATEST SPORTS NEWS FROM 12BET – Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny became the newest member in a line of Luis Suarez’ critics, as he called the Liverpool striker a “cheat”.

Koscielny revealed that he dislikes having encounters with Suarez, moving to affirm that the striker is prone to diving, as reported by many critics. He said that the player tends to simulate even without hits from other players.

Saying that Suarez is prone to play-acting, Koscielny recalled instances when Arsenal has played past through rival Liverpool, in which the striker was taunting him on the pitch, pulling his shirt, and simulating falls “as soon as there is contact”.

Apart from Koscielny, Stoke City manager Tony Pulis and FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce came forward to criticize Suarez. Liverpool came to the striker’s defence and alleged that they do not get rightful penalties due to the player’s negative image.

Sports Bet News | NBA 2012-13 News: Dwight Howard Might Not Debut In Preseason

THE LATEST NBA 2012-2013 UPDATE – When NBA starts this season for new Los Angeles Lakers centre Dwight Howard, it might not be on a preseason game.

Howard did not talk about skipping last Sunday’s preseason against the Golden State Warriors. Yet, instead of stepping on the hard court, he stayed on the sides instead wearing his trademark bow tie.

“My goal wasn’t to play in a preseason game”, Howard boldly replied. He noted that he wants to help Lakers win the championships but added that he needs to be 100% fit first before he could do so.

Currently afflicted with a back injury he got from offseason, Howard made clear his goal to “give everything” to the Lakers. The team last won the championship series in 2010, having played past through rival Boston Celtics.

Sports Bet News: United, Spurs win to keep pressure on Chelsea

LONDON (AP) — Manchester United relied on early goals from its much-maligned defense and a stunning strike from Tom Cleverley to secure an impressive 3-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday, keeping the pressure on Chelsea at the top of the Premier League.

Tottenham is just a point behind second-place United after beating Aston Villa 2-0 for a fourth straight win, but the misery continues for Liverpool courtesy of a frustrating 0-0 home draw with Stoke.

Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra scored headers from corners for United in the opening 15 minutes and could then celebrate a rare clean sheet this season after Cleverley's long-range curler in the 71st made the game safe at St. James' Park.

"We came here, defended brilliantly. We fully deserved the victory," said England striker Wayne Rooney, who starred in his role as an attacking midfielder for United. "The first six games of the season we haven't defended well enough — not just the back four, the whole team, and today we were brilliant against a physical team."

United is level on points with Manchester City and four behind Chelsea after seven games, with the standings starting to take shape and the likely title contenders back among the frontrunners. Tottenham can be included among them, with goals by Steven Caulker and Aaron Lennon moving the team to fifth — level on points with fourth-place Everton.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas dropped goalkeeper Brad Friedel to the bench to end the American veteran's record run of 310 Premier League starts in a row, dating back to May 2004. His replacement, summer signing Hugo Lloris, barely had a save to make at White Hart Lane on his league debut.

"Obviously Brad was disappointed but as a great professional, he ended up accepting the decision," Villas-Boas said. "We respect his performances and I'm sure he will be back in the team as soon as possible."

Liverpool remains languishing in the wrong half of the table after failing to break down a stubborn, physical Stoke backline at Anfield, although the hosts struck the post twice through Raheem Sterling and Martin Skrtel.

"We just needed the final touch in the box to round up some good play," said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, whose team is in 14th place following its worst start to a league season in more than a century.

In Sunday's other match, Jose Fonte scored a late equalizer — his second goal of the game — to earn Southampton a 2-2 draw against Fulham and lift the team out of the bottom three. United lost 3-0 at Newcastle last season and there were fears the hosts' stellar frontline of Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse would cause havoc against a defense that has been criticized heavily in recent weeks.

Yet for all United's big names in attack — Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck also played alongside Rooney — it was its defense that guided the team to victory and only a second shutout in the league.

Evans powered home a header from Van Persie's center in the eighth minute before Evra got in front of Ba to glance in Rooney's inswinging corner. "Unfortunately, with all talent they have on the pitch, it was set plays they scored from," Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said. "The two goals killed us."

United goalkeeper David de Gea clawed away a stooping effort from Cisse with the ball inches from crossing the line, moments after Ba headed against the crossbar, before Cleverley sealed the three points with a curling shot from the corner of the area.

At first, it appeared Cleverley meant it as a cross — and that's what United manager Alex Ferguson thought — but the England midfielder insisted he had gone for a shot. "I meant to put it in the far corner," he said, with a cheeky grin.

The pressure was on United after seeing Chelsea and City romp to easy wins on Saturday and given it had lost 3-2 to Spurs in its last league outing. A victory was also important as teams now have two weeks off for the international break.

"We were focused today," Ferguson said. "It's not easy coming to Newcastle; they're a big, aggressive team. I'm pleased with the result and pleased with the performance." After a slow start to the season, Tottenham is in fine form and was a deserved winner over Villa, going ahead when Caulker diverted in a shot from Jermain Defoe that was heading wide in the 58th.

Lennon then shot past Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan in the 67th after being set up by Clint Dempsey. "Overall a great performance," said Villas-Boas. "We told the players at halftime to persist with the intensity and we would come good."

Sports Bet News: Man City Hang On Against Borussia Dortmund

THE LATEST SPORTS BET NEWS UPDATE – Premier League champions Manchester City looked headed to defeat against an impressive Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League group stage match. Substitute Mario Balotelli rescued the hosts through a successful last-minute penalty, ending the match 1-1.

The first half looked disastrous for City, as they met with sturdy opposition from the visiting Bundesliga champions. Edin Dzeko created an opening for Samir Nasri. Keeper Roman Weidenfeller hurriedly brushed off the French international’s attempt.

Weidenfeller saved numerous shots from persistent City attackers. Sergio Aguero, taking off from a David Silva assist, flew the ball towards the net but saw his shot fended off by the Dortmund keeper.

Joe Hart was equally impressive in guarding his post. Dortmund’s Mario Gotze nearly got away from the feisty City keeper after he rolled the ball near the enemy woodwork. Hart leaped lengthily for a save to keep his side at bay.

Silva failed to get a Pablo Zabaleta pass in after he impressively shot from close range. Hart had to deal with saving attempts shortly before half time, as he halted an effort from Ilkay Gundogan that nearly gave the lead to the visitors.

With both sides taking off from a scoreless first half, Dortmund started their lead chase with Gotze tormenting Hart with another thwarted effort. Striker Marco Reus played past through rival midfielder Jack Rodwell and went on to fire the opening goal of the game for his side.

Rodwell’s mistake left City scrambling towards the remainder of the match. Attacking attempts left the English champions helpless with a faulty back line. Gundogan, Lewandowski and Reus sought to hammer Hart’s net but the keeper diligently remained firm.

As Etihad’s home crowd started to look hopeless, the entry of Mario Balotelli reignited hope for City. After Neven Subotic handballed Aguero, the Italian talisman took charge of the penalty. He then fired the ball straight inside the net and sent Weidenfeller jumping to the other side.
