World no. 3 Rafael Nadal’s exit from the tournament due to injuries gave way for Ferrer to move up to the fourth seed to face Gasquet, a relatively easier opponent, in the fourth round of the tournament. Both will have an easier time to advance, as they do not have to face either world no. 1 Roger Federer or no. 2 Novak Djokovic on their way to the semi-finals.

Ferrer enjoys great progress this year. He rose to fifth in the world rankings and has figured prominently in two Grand Slam events – semi-final in the 2012 French Open and quarterfinal in the 2012 Wimbledon. He aims to get past through this year’s US Open semi-final – a feat he achieved in 2007. A clay court player, he still shows great progressive potential even at 30 years of age. He breezed through his previous US Open fixtures this year, only losing to just one set in his third-round victory against Hewitt.

Gasquet, playignagainst tough oponnent Ferrer in the fourth round, has won only once in his eight matches with the Spaniard. He enjoys consistency in form following his 2009 doping ban and plans to reach the quarterfinals in the US Open for the first time following three fourth-round exits in 2005, 2006 and 2010.  He lost in the final rounds of this year’s Toronto Masters and Estoril Open, but raised his world ranking to 13th due to those matches.

Ferrer’s impressive showing in two Grand Slam events and his recent rise to the world’s top five this year makes him a clear favourite over Gasquet. He was consistent in beating the Frenchman in straight sets during their last two matches this year – one of which includes a Grand Slam event, the Australian Open.  Gasquet will definitely fight back to maintain his form consistency and target a semi-final finish, but Ferrer will win in four sets.
